Dear Readers, Chamomile is the most popular medicinal plant in Europe. In the wild, the annual plant, which belongs to the sunflower group, can hardly be found anymore.
This flower originally comes from south-eastern Europe, but has long been native from Central Europe to Scandinavia. The sun-loving, 10-50 cm tall field herb is known for its distinctive scent and yellow-white flowers.
A distinction is made between so-called real chamomile, which is mainly used in medicines because of its strong odor, and chamomile flowers, which are found in tea and baths as well as in creams, ointments, cosmetics, and medicines.
The Medicinal Plant Chamomile
It has long been considered one of the most widely used medicinal plants. Their main use is in gastrointestinal diseases. Among other things, it has antibacterial, dehydrating, calming, diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and sweat-inducing effects.
Chamomile is used for numerous diseases, including allergies, asthma, boils, diarrhea, flatulence, fever, blemishes, coughs, itching, runny nose, insomnia, stress, irritable bowel syndrome, and tonsillitis.
Gastrointestinal
The sun-loving herb is often used as a tea or tincture. It soothes abdominal pain, relaxes, and helps children and adults with upset stomachs and gastric ulcers. Thanks to its antibacterial and muscle-relaxing effect, the daisy family helps with both diarrhea and constipation.
Chamomile for Bladder
Another area of application for chamomile is bladder diseases. It helps with kidney weakness and bladder problems, promotes urine production, and thus facilitates the elimination of harmful substances. As a result, it can also alleviate rheumatic diseases and gout.
Relaxing Effect
It is known for its calming and relaxing effect on the nervous system and can thus counteract complaints such as nervousness and insomnia. Studies have shown that it contains substances that act on the same areas of the brain and nervous system as anti-anxiety drugs.
Thanks to its muscle-relaxing effect, it helps you fall asleep more easily and ensures emotional and mental serenity.
Chamomile Respiratory Tract
For respiratory diseases (cold, runny nose, and sore throat) gargling and drinking with chamomile can help, as it disinfects and heals. Due to its drying effect, however, it should not be used as a tea if you have a dry cough.
Skin
Like a steam bath, chamomile is effective for sinusitis, nasal congestion, blemished skin, and acne. The anti-inflammatory properties have a calming effect and the essential oils kill bacteria, thereby preventing inflammation or reducing existing inflammation at the same time.
Naturopathy makes use of this in many areas. It removes bacteria that cause pimples and soothes and heals the inflamed skin.
Abdomen
The term Matricaria is derived from the Latin word matrix and means “womb”. The medicinal plant is often used to treat gynecological complaints such as menstrual cramps and premenstrual syndrome. It is also ideal for hip baths, for example, it relieves itching with hemorrhoids and infections in the genital area. It can also help pregnant women against morning sickness.
Cancer
About 80% of all known cancers arise from damaged DNA molecules. Chamomile contains the substance apigenin. In the human body, apigenin is able to bind around 160 different proteins. In comparison, the average chemo drug already has a problem with binding one protein at the same time. A study from Japan shows that chamomile stimulates apoptosis (cell death) of cancer cells because it has strong anti-inflammatory properties.
Research has shown that with the help of chamomile, cancer cells begin to shrink within 24 hours and the spread of cancer cells is slowed down.
Allergies and Contraindications
Since chamomile is a composite plant, allergy sufferers often have problems with treatment with chamomile. Use on the eye should also be avoided, as the fine hairs of the chamomile flowers can irritate the eyes. Chamomile products should therefore not be used in the event of eye infections.
