Never stand in one place still unnecessarily without need.
Among third rural people, backache is rare because they hardly stand in place. They sit with cross legged while cooking. If they are waiting for the bus they squat on their haunches. Because of the postural strain of standing, backache and spine pain aggravated.
West people stand still for a long time in cocktail parties. While cooking, ironing, marketing, waiting for bus and train, watching games or sports people stand still which directly affect their backward posture and leads to backache spine pain.
Should not stand still for a long time whenever a possible move to relieve the strain on the back and spine. There is old Turkish proverb: Never stand up when you can sit down; Never sit down when you can lie down.

Hi Sazia,
How true that our posture in the west is often messed up. I spend much time sitting at my desk and standing, which I see are not the best!
I do try to correct my spine position to it’s natural shape when I am conscious of slouching or holding an uncomfortable position for my neck, and moving around regularly to relieve the muscles.
Some great information thanks Sazia 😀

Sazia,
Having good posture will reduce back pain. This is why it is so important when we are sitting in front of our computers most of the time to be mindful of this.
I do think one of the leading causes of back pain, besides injuries, is people slouching while they work.
No matter what we are doing, I find that if I’m in a position too long of a time my back tells me to start moving lol.

Hi Sazia
I used to suffer from a lot of back pain so I’m now very careful with bending and lifting. Sitting at the computer for so long with the wrong sort of chair made things worse. I now have a good chair and it’s made a difference. Because I work from home I hardly use my laptop.and use my desktop computer most of the time. I also use an ergonomic keyboard with a padded wrist rest, and a small mouse to suit my hand size, because I started to get pains in my wrists and up into my shoulders.

Joy Healey says
Hi Sazia
I completely agree that being in one position for too long is detrimental to health.
However, I’ve taken a rather different approach after reading on Harleena’s blog about “standing desks” and the view that “sitting is the new smoking”. So last year I bought myself a “standing desk” that I’m finding very helpful to correct my bad sitting position.
I will concede, however, that if I try to use it all day I become uncomfortable, so – as always – balance seems to be the key.
The other thing I’ve found helpful to correct my aches and pains is attending regular yoga classes. If I miss them I start to get very uncomfortable.
Thanks for posing an alternative point of view,
Joy

Dr. Erica Goodstone says
Sazia,
Hi. My first visit to your blog. Yes, I have seen many people suffering badly from back pain that could have been prevented or at least alleviated. My work includes a type of gentle body therapy, combining movements from Alexander Technique and Feldenkrais moves. Specifically in the Alexander Technique, clients are reminded to bring their body back into alignment and the practitioner helps this to happen. My work combines the touch with counseling. When someone gets back into alignment, which can be really unfamiliar, different emotions emerge. Our habitual posture results from our emotional responses to people and situations, often at a very early age, and by holding the posture we maintain a certain way of thinking and being. When we change the posture, we change our lives – and in the process we don’t have those nagging back pains and other uncomfortable body aches.
Warmly,
Dr. Erica

Hi Sazia,
Bad posture is a common problem and people are suffering from back pain all the time. Having good posture can make a difference in health. I believe that’s why so many people are going to chiropractors these days because our bodies handle so much stress.
Thanks for sharing,
Lillian
